Anne Marie Trechslin (1927 – 2007), was a Swiss painter, wood cutter, draftsman, and illustrator. Trechslin studied painting in Paris and at the Bern School of Applied Arts, then in Italy and England. She gained international recognition with her bird and flower watercolors. Her watercolors are true-to-life reproductions of plants and also harmonious and figurative representations. She became particularly known for illustrating numerous art and specialist books on the subject of flowers, as an expert in the illustration of roses and camellias. In 1968, a rose was dedicated to her by the rose breeder Jean-Marie Meilland. In 1987, Trechslin received the Paul Haupt Prize for her book illustrations. A series of stamps based on watercolors by Anne Marie Trechslin’s flower, fruit, and bird motifs were issued by the Republic of San Marino and Switzerland. For the “Year of the Rose 2002”, Pro Juventute issued another charity stamp series based on Trechslin’s templates, depicting the rose varieties Christmas Rose, Ingrid Bergman, Charmian, Belle Vaudoise, and Spring Gold. When rubbed with your finger, these stamps exude a rose scent and the Christmas rose smells like Christmas, like fir trees, cinnamon, and cloves. Trechslin was awarded the “Cavallino d’Oro” prize in Venice for the stamps. The artist also worked for the Botanical Library in Pittsburgh and the Musée d?Histoire Naturelle in Paris.
